Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie Heiden, whom he married on April 29, 1950, their infant son, John Charles Sylvester, and two sisters, June Linneman and Myra Reagles. He is survived by his children, Marcia Johnson (Dennis), Claudia Harman and Thomas Sylvester (Lisa), as well as seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Charles was proud to have served in the Army National Guard during World War II. He was also proud that two of his children served their country, in the Army and the Air Force.
Charles and Dorothy raised their family in Ellenton, Florida, where he was an active member of the Ellenton Methodist Church, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was a long-time member of the Ellenton Volunteer Fire Department and served as their chief for several years.
Upon retirement Charles and Dorothy moved to Franklin, NC, where they lived in the Rolling Acres Mobile Home Park, and where he was a member of the park’s Board of Directors. He was a regular at the Macon County Senior Center in Franklin.
After Dorothy’s passing, Charles lived with Marcia in Ellenton and with Tom in Tipp City, OH. Knowing his Dad was a lifelong lover of games, Tom sought out opportunities for them to play Euchre, to Charles’ great pleasure.
There will be a private family memorial gathering to celebrate Charles’ life in February.
